In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Bulgarian animal fats market, when its value decreased by -90.3% to $X. In 2021, the amount of animal fats and oils exported from Bulgaria plummeted to X tons, falling by -42.7% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 534%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, animal fats exports fell significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 3,197% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Belgium (X tons), the UK (X kg) and Spain (X kg) were the main destinations of animal fats exports from Bulgaria, together accounting for 95% of total exports. Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 4.9%.

In 2021, purchases abroad of animal fats and oils decreased by -78% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 1,424% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, animal fats imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 1,874%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of animal fats to Bulgaria, accounting for a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, animal fats imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Romania (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands stood at +47.2%.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of animal fats and oils to Bulgaria, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($X), with a 6.2% share of total imports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Romania amounted to $X per ton.
