In 2021, the Bulgarian antisera market decreased by -60.4% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, consumption showed buoyant growth. Antisera consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Exports from Bulgaria

In 2021, shipments abroad of antisera and other blood fractions increased by 121% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, antisera exports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 101%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of antisera exports from Bulgaria, together accounting for 65% of total exports. Saudi Arabia, Austria, Vietnam, the Netherlands, Cyprus and North Macedonia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cyprus (with a CAGR of +232.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for antisera exported from Bulgaria were Germany ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Turkey ($X), with a combined 55% share of total exports. Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, Austria, the Netherlands, Vietnam and North Macedonia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Among the main countries of destination, Cyprus, with a CAGR of +200.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average antisera export price amounted to $X per kg, declining by -61% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 236% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per kg in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cyprus ($X per kg), while the average price for exports to North Macedonia ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Latvia (+47.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Bulgaria

In 2021, the amount of antisera and other blood fractions imported into Bulgaria soared to X tons, rising by 20% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 117%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, antisera imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Switzerland (X tons) constituted the largest antisera supplier to Bulgaria, with a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, antisera imports from Switzerland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fourfold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Switzerland stood at -4.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-2.0% per year) and China (+114.2% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Switzerland ($X) were the largest antisera suppliers to Bulgaria, together accounting for 73% of total imports. These countries were followed by Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Austria, China and France, which together accounted for a further 21%.

China, with a CAGR of +123.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average antisera import price stood at $X per kg in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 145% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per kg. From 2020 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per kg), while the price for China ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+29.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
