Apricot Market Size in Bulgaria

The Bulgarian apricot market shrank to $X in 2022, reducing by -7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -20.5% against 2019 indices. Apricot consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, apricot production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 120%. Apricot production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of apricots in Bulgaria reduced to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -8.8% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the yield indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, apricot yield increased by +19.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 95% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average apricot yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of apricots in Bulgaria fell dramatically to X ha, which is down by -19.9% against 2021. In general, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 66%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Exports from Bulgaria

In 2022, overseas shipments of apricots increased by 146% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 178% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, apricot exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a strong expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for apricot exports from Bulgaria, accounting for a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, apricot exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tons), threefold. Belarus (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany amounted to +22.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+27.1% per year) and Belarus (+9.4% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and Belarus ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for apricot exported from Bulgaria worldwide, with a combined 81% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Poland, with a CAGR of +35.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average apricot export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -13.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 52%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+22.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of apricots increased by 93% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 97%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, apricot imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a strong expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Greece (X tons) constituted the largest apricot supplier to Bulgaria, accounting for a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, apricot imports from Greece exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), ninefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Greece stood at +3.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+31.5% per year) and Germany (+105.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest apricot suppliers to Bulgaria were Greece ($X), Turkey ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 94% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Germany, with a CAGR of +68.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average apricot import price amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a pronounced expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 69%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+9.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
