As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, carrot and turnip exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 1,676% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Romania (X tons) was the main destination for carrot and turnip exports from Bulgaria, with a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, carrot and turnip exports to Romania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Luxembourg (X tons), sixfold. Greece (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Romania stood at +81.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Luxembourg (+149.5% per year) and Greece (-7.4% per year).
In value terms, Romania ($X) remains the key foreign market for carrots and turnips exports from Bulgaria, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Luxembourg ($X), with a 7.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 6.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Romania stood at +89.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Luxembourg (+149.4% per year) and Germany (+9.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average carrot and turnip export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -19.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 80%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Bulgaria
In 2022, overseas purchases of carrots and turnips increased by 8.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, carrot and turnip imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +1.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 31%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest carrot and turnip supplier to Bulgaria, accounting for a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, carrot and turnip imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Serbia (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Greece (X tons), with a 6.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Serbia (+57.4% per year) and Greece (-3.6% per year).
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of carrots and turnips to Bulgaria, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Turkey was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+107.1% per year) and the Netherlands (+36.9% per year).
