Exports by Country
Romania (X tons) was the main destination for chili and pepper exports from Bulgaria, with a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, chili and pepper exports to Romania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Romania amounted to +42.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+49.6% per year) and Germany (+7.9% per year).
In value terms, Romania ($X) remains the key foreign market for chilies and peppers (green) exports from Bulgaria, comprising 51% of total exports. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
In value terms, chili and pepper imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 41%. In 2022, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest chili and pepper supplier to Bulgaria, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, chili and pepper imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, North Macedonia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Greece (X tons), with a 17% share.
