Coconut Market Size in Bulgaria

In 2022, the Bulgarian coconut market increased by 30% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption saw resilient growth. In 2022, shipments abroad of coconuts increased by 6.6% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 3,922%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coconut exports rose modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 2,010%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Germany (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) were the main destinations of coconut exports from Bulgaria, with a combined 56% share of total exports. The Czech Republic, Romania, Ireland, Switzerland, Hungary, Ukraine, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Denmark and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

In 2022, the average coconut export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -1.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 294%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+18.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of coconuts increased by 27% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a notable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 170% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coconut imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 173%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of coconut to Bulgaria, accounting for a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, coconut imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Greece (X tons), fivefold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
