Green Coffee Market Size in Bulgaria

In 2022, the Bulgarian green coffee market increased by 15% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Green coffee exports from Bulgaria dropped to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -10.2% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports saw a significant contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 304% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, green coffee exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a dramatic decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 243% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for green coffee exports from Bulgaria, accounting for a 64% share of total exports. Moreover, green coffee exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Slovenia (X tons), with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany stood at +86.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+63.5% per year) and Slovenia (-58.4% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X), Georgia ($X) and Slovenia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for green coffee exported from Bulgaria worldwide, together accounting for 65% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Germany, with a CAGR of +62.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average green coffee export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -22.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Georgia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Georgia (+14.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of coffee (green) decreased by -11.6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, green coffee imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Vietnam (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main suppliers of green coffee imports to Bulgaria, with a combined 54% share of total imports. Germany, India, Uganda, Tanzania, Greece, China, Papua New Guinea, Honduras, Peru and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +46.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Vietnam ($X) and India ($X) constituted the largest green coffee suppliers to Bulgaria, with a combined 51% share of total imports. Germany, Indonesia, China, Honduras, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Greece, Uganda, Tanzania and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +46.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average green coffee import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
