The Bulgarian couscous market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In value terms, Germany ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for couscous exports from Bulgaria, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Montenegro ($X), with a 5.2% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled +258.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Montenegro (0.0% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (0.0% per year).

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Couscous imports into Bulgaria skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, growing by 78% against 2020. Overall, imports posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 113%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, couscous imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 100%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
