After two years of growth, overseas purchases of cucumbers and gherkins decreased by -12.9% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Greece (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Albania (X tons) were the main suppliers of cucumber and gherkin imports to Bulgaria, with a combined 94% share of total imports. Germany, North Macedonia and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.9%.
