Durum wheat imports into Bulgaria soared to X tons in 2022, rising by 368% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Ukraine (X tons) was the main supplier of durum wheat to Bulgaria, accounting for a 90% share of total imports. Moreover, durum wheat imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.2% share.

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of durum wheat to Bulgaria, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 9.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Ukraine totaled +63.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+14.7% per year) and Italy (-11.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average durum wheat import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -67.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 106%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+86.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
