In 2021, the average fresh fish fillet export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 155%. In 2021, overseas purchases of fresh or chilled fish fillets increased by 39% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 57% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh fish fillet imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Spain (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the main suppliers of fresh fish fillet imports to Bulgaria, together comprising 77% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Romania, which together accounted for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +47.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
