Garlic Market Size in Bulgaria

In 2022, the Bulgarian garlic market decreased by -0.2% to $X, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 209% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, garlic exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 181%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) were the main destinations of garlic exports from Bulgaria, with a combined 83% share of total exports.

Imports into Bulgaria

In 2022, purchases abroad of garlic decreased by -28.2% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 173%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 117% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Spain (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the main suppliers of garlic imports to Bulgaria, together comprising 74% of total imports. Turkey, the Netherlands and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +22.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Greece ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Italy ($X) were the largest garlic suppliers to Bulgaria, together accounting for 62% of total imports.
