Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, granite building stone exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 156%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, granite building stone imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -6.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 59%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X tons), India (X tons) and Iran (X tons) were the main suppliers of granite building stone imports to Bulgaria, with a combined 69% share of total imports. Turkey, Egypt, Brazil and North Macedonia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
