Exports from Bulgaria

In 2022, shipments abroad of grapefruits increased by 43% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 187% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, grapefruit exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 183%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Poland (X tons) was the main destination for grapefruit exports from Bulgaria, with a 62% share of total exports. Moreover, grapefruit exports to Poland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Romania (X tons), fivefold. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Poland amounted to +69.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (+23.7% per year) and the Czech Republic (+42.0% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the key foreign market for grapefruits exports from Bulgaria, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Romania ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 9.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Poland totaled +73.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (+31.8% per year) and the Czech Republic (+41.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average grapefruit export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -14.1% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 22%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Poland ($X per ton) and Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of grapefruits decreased by -3.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +66.8% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

In value terms, grapefruit imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of grapefruit to Bulgaria, accounting for a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, grapefruit imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 2.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Turkey amounted to +6.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+5.8% per year) and Germany (+39.3% per year).

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of grapefruits to Bulgaria, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Turkey amounted to +9.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+9.1% per year) and Germany (+44.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average grapefruit import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -12.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 25%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
