Hop Market Size in Bulgaria

The Bulgarian hop market soared to $X in 2022, growing by 116% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. Hop consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hop production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 30% against the previous year. Hop production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of hops in Bulgaria expanded modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, picking up by 1.7% against 2021. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -33.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 32%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 60%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of hop exports from Bulgaria, with a combined 82% share of total exports. Poland, the Netherlands, France, the Czech Republic and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +107.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the key foreign market for hops exports from Bulgaria, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 14% share.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of hops decreased by -33.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 124% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, hop imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In 2022, Germany (X tons) was the main supplier of hop to Bulgaria, accounting for a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, hop imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Czech Republic (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany was relatively modest.
