In value terms, paper and paperboard exports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 198%. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons), Cyprus (X tons) and Serbia (X tons) were the main destinations of paper and paperboard exports from Bulgaria, with a combined 80% share of total exports. Armenia, Greece, the Czech Republic and North Macedonia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Armenia (with a CAGR of +360.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cyprus (+26.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Bulgaria
In 2022, overseas purchases of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) increased by 3% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 127%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paper and paperboard imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 119%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Italy (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the main suppliers of paper and paperboard imports to Bulgaria, together comprising 80% of total imports. Switzerland, Turkey, Serbia and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Switzerland (with a CAGR of +52.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) to Bulgaria, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Greece ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Sweden, with an 8.2% share.
