In value terms, polystyrene in primary forms exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 350% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Romania (X tons) was the main destination for polystyrene in primary forms exports from Bulgaria, with a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, polystyrene in primary forms exports to Romania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Greece (X tons), fourfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.

Over the period under review, total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -3.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Moreover, polystyrene in primary forms imports from Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Iran amounted to +47.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+24.5% per year) and Germany (-6.2% per year).
In value terms, Iran ($X) constituted the largest supplier of polystyrene in primary forms (excluding expansible polystyrene) to Bulgaria, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Iran stood at +45.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+22.5% per year) and Germany (-5.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average polystyrene in primary forms import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern.
