The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 155% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2019, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The UK (X cubic meters) was the main destination for railway sleeper exports from Bulgaria, with a 99% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania (X cubic meters), with a 1.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2019, the average annual growth rate of volume to the UK amounted to +23.9%.
In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for railway or tramway sleepers (cross-ties) of wood exports from Bulgaria, comprising 80% of total exports. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2019, the country with the highest price was North Macedonia ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+273.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Bulgaria
For the eighth year in a row, Bulgaria recorded growth in overseas purchases of railway or tramway sleepers (cross-ties) of wood, which increased by 16% to X cubic meters in 2019. Overall, imports posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 121%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2019 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, railway sleeper imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2019. In general, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 89% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2019 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Poland (X cubic meters), France (X cubic meters) and Austria (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of railway sleeper imports to Bulgaria, together accounting for 99% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +48.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
