Rum Market Size in Bulgaria

In 2022, the Bulgarian rum market increased by 26% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +47.9% against 2020 indices. In 2022, shipments abroad of rum decreased by -64.5% to X litres, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 136% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rum exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 129% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Romania (X litres), China (X litres) and North Macedonia (X litres) were the main destinations of rum exports from Bulgaria, with a combined 60% share of total exports. Serbia, the Netherlands, Cyprus, Italy and Kazakhstan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +83.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and North Macedonia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for rum exported from Bulgaria worldwide, with a combined 57% share of total exports.

Italy, with a CAGR of +226.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 21% against the previous year. In 2022, overseas purchases of rum increased by 30% to X litres, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rum imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 107% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Italy (X litres), the Netherlands (X litres) and Germany (X litres) were the main suppliers of rum imports to Bulgaria, with a combined 65% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Romania, the Dominican Republic and France, which together accounted for a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +95.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while the price for Germany ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
