Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Serbia, Mali, North Macedonia, Armenia, Belarus, South Africa, Poland, Moldova, Cyprus and Syrian Arab Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of sanitary towels, tampons, napkins and diapers increased by 8% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sanitary towel and diaper imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Romania (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of sanitary towel and diaper imports to Bulgaria, together accounting for 51% of total imports.
