The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 12,142%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 8,281% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for shelled hazelnut exports from Bulgaria, with a 49% share of total exports. Moreover, shelled hazelnut exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany totaled +118.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+120.3% per year) and France (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for shelled hazelnuts exports from Bulgaria, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany amounted to +102.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+99.8% per year) and France (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average shelled hazelnut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 330%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Poland ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) and Turkey ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Greece (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Bulgaria

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of shelled hazelnuts, when their volume decreased by -14.1% to X tons. In general, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 136%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports declined notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 133% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest shelled hazelnut supplier to Bulgaria, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, shelled hazelnut imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Georgia (X tons), fivefold. Greece (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey totaled +22.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Georgia (+22.9% per year) and Greece (-17.3% per year).

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of shelled hazelnuts to Bulgaria, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Georgia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Turkey amounted to +32.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Georgia (+24.8% per year) and the Netherlands (+7.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average shelled hazelnut import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -2.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+8.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
