In general, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 33%. The exports peaked at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, grape wine spirits exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany (X litres) was the main destination for grape wine spirits exports from Bulgaria, accounting for a 37% share of total exports. Moreover, grape wine spirits exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X litres), fivefold. For the fifth year in a row, Bulgaria recorded growth in purchases abroad of spirits obtained from distilled grape wine or grape marc, which increased by 28% to X litres in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 140%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, grape wine spirits imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

North Macedonia (X litres), Turkey (X litres) and Armenia (X litres) were the main suppliers of grape wine spirits imports to Bulgaria, with a combined 70% share of total imports. France, the Netherlands, Serbia, Lithuania, Italy, Moldova, Germany and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.
