Greece (X tons) was the main destination for sugar exports from Bulgaria, accounting for a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, sugar exports to Greece exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Romania (X tons), more than tenfold.

In value terms, Greece ($X) remains the key foreign market for sugar exports from Bulgaria, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($X), with a 6.9% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Greece amounted to +1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (-25.9% per year) and Italy (-20.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average sugar export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 6.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (-2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Bulgaria
In 2021, supplies from abroad of sugar decreased by -10.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sugar imports totaled $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Serbia (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Romania (X tons) were the main suppliers of sugar imports to Bulgaria, with a combined 54% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in South Africa (with a CAGR of +324.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Serbia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sugar to Bulgaria, comprising 28% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Romania ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Serbia stood at +25.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Romania (-3.5% per year) and South Africa (+268.1% per year).

In 2021, the average sugar import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 31% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices from Germany ($X per ton) and Serbia ($X per ton), while the price for South Africa ($X per ton) and Algeria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (-0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
