After five years of growth, the Bulgarian concrete tile market decreased by -1.3% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Concrete tile production peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2022, overseas shipments of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone decreased by -47% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after six years of growth. In general, exports showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, concrete tile exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Romania (X tons) was the main destination for concrete tile exports from Bulgaria, with a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, concrete tile exports to Romania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, North Macedonia (X tons), threefold. Greece (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Romania amounted to +22.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: North Macedonia (-0.5% per year) and Greece (-2.6% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for concrete tile exported from Bulgaria were Greece ($X), Romania ($X) and North Macedonia ($X), with a combined 73% share of total exports.

Romania, with a CAGR of +5.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average concrete tile export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 32%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Greece ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Moldova (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Bulgaria

In 2022, purchases abroad of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone decreased by -16.6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 52%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In value terms, concrete tile imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +29.4% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Turkey (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the main suppliers of concrete tile imports to Bulgaria, together comprising 80% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +18.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Romania ($X) and Italy ($X) were the largest concrete tile suppliers to Bulgaria, together accounting for 58% of total imports.
