Wallpaper Market Size in Bulgaria

In 2021, the Bulgarian wallpaper market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wallpaper production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 30%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of wallpaper and wall coverings decreased by -1.3% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after three years of growth. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 584%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wallpaper exports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 260% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Georgia (X tons) was the main destination for wallpaper exports from Bulgaria, accounting for a 41% share of total exports. Moreover, wallpaper exports to Georgia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Azerbaijan (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Georgia amounted to +117.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+63.1% per year) and Azerbaijan (+106.8% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X), Georgia ($X) and Azerbaijan ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for wallpaper exported from Bulgaria worldwide, together accounting for 53% of total exports. Armenia, Serbia, North Macedonia and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

Armenia, with a CAGR of +56.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average wallpaper export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 196%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Georgia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Bulgaria

In 2021, overseas purchases of wallpaper and wall coverings increased by 6.2% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 9.3% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wallpaper imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ukraine (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) were the main suppliers of wallpaper imports to Bulgaria, with a combined 66% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Russia, Italy, France and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +45.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest wallpaper suppliers to Bulgaria were Germany ($X), Ukraine ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 64% share of total imports. Belarus, Russia, Turkey and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +46.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average wallpaper import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
