Banana Market Size in Cameroon

The Cameroonian banana market stood at $X in 2022, increasing by 2.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Banana exports from Cameroon shrank to X tons in 2022, reducing by -4.8% compared with the year before. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, banana exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 98% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X tons) was the main destination for banana exports from Cameroon, with a 30% share of total exports. Moreover, banana exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Belgium stood at -4.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-1.3% per year) and Germany (+32.6% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for bananas exports from Cameroon, comprising 16% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 7.7% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK stood at +2.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+31.3% per year) and France (-14.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average banana export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 28%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Cameroon

Banana imports into Cameroon reduced to X tons in 2022, waning by -8.3% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 1,857% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, banana imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 1,681%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
