Banana And Plantain Market Size in Cameroon

After four years of growth, the Cameroonian banana and plantain market decreased by -2.3% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 162%. Banana and plantain production peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The average yield of bananas and plantains in Cameroon contracted slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately equating 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 20%. The banana and plantain yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The banana and plantain harvested area in Cameroon shrank slightly to X ha in 2022, with a decrease of -3% against the year before. Exports from Cameroon

In 2022, approx. X tons of bananas and plantains were exported from Cameroon; increasing by 14% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 82%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, banana and plantain exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 171%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The UK (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of banana and plantain exports from Cameroon, with a combined 30% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +28.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for bananas and plantains exports from Cameroon, comprising 17% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 8.2% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+28.4% per year) and France (-17.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average banana and plantain export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -15.7% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, banana and plantain export price decreased by -20.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 48%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Cameroon

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of bananas and plantains decreased by -86.9% to X kg in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a sharp shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 130% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, banana and plantain imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a sharp descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 135% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Brazil (X kg) constituted the largest supplier of banana and plantain to Cameroon, accounting for a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, banana and plantain imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Moldova (X kg), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Brazil totaled -51.6%.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of bananas and plantains to Cameroon, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Moldova ($X), with a 33% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Brazil totaled -56.6%.

Import Prices by Country

The average banana and plantain import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -8% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+347.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
