Exports from Cameroon
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery decreased by -4.7% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 14%. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Congo (X tons) was the main destination for candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports from Cameroon, accounting for a 56% share of total exports. Moreover, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports to Congo exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Gabon (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Equatorial Guinea (X tons), with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Congo stood at -5.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Gabon (-11.1% per year) and Equatorial Guinea (-6.0% per year).
In value terms, Congo ($X), Gabon ($X) and Equatorial Guinea ($X) were the largest markets for candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exported from Cameroon worldwide, together comprising 80% of total exports. These countries were followed by Central African Republic, which accounted for a further 19%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Central African Republic, with a CAGR of -12.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average export price for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Gabon ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Gabon (-6.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Imports of Candies, Sweets, and Nonchocolate Confectionery
Imports into Cameroon
In 2022, purchases abroad of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery increased by 28% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 39%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery supplier to Cameroon, accounting for a 42% share of total imports. Moreover, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Morocco (X tons), threefold. Pakistan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India amounted to +9.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (-1.8% per year) and Pakistan (+46.1% per year).
In value terms, the largest candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery suppliers to Cameroon were India ($X), Morocco ($X) and Pakistan ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports. Brazil, Nigeria, China, France, Egypt, Turkey, Togo and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +58.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average import price for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 15%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
