After four years of growth, the Cameroonian iron or steel leaf-spring market decreased by -16.4% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, recorded a prominent increase. Iron or steel leaf-spring consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In 2022, overseas shipments of iron or steel leaf-springs and leaves increased by 13% to X kg, rising for the second year in a row after five years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a sharp downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 419% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, iron or steel leaf-spring exports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a dramatic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 498% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Equatorial Guinea (X kg) was the main destination for iron or steel leaf-spring exports from Cameroon, accounting for a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, iron or steel leaf-spring exports to Equatorial Guinea exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Central African Republic (X kg), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Benin (X kg), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Equatorial Guinea totaled -22.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Central African Republic (-45.1% per year) and Benin (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Equatorial Guinea ($X), Central African Republic ($X) and Congo ($X) constituted the largest markets for iron or steel leaf-spring exported from Cameroon worldwide, together accounting for 98% of total exports. Benin lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 1.9%.

Benin, with a CAGR of 0.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average iron or steel leaf-spring export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 79% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Central African Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Central African Republic (+20.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Iron or Steel Leaf-Springs and Leaves

Imports into Cameroon

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of iron or steel leaf-springs and leaves, when their volume decreased by -12% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 149%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, iron or steel leaf-spring imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 71%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest iron or steel leaf-spring supplier to Cameroon, with a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, iron or steel leaf-spring imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X tons), with a 4.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +22.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+15.3% per year) and France (+7.5% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of iron or steel leaf-springs and leaves to Cameroon, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 7.5% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +23.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-6.9% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+11.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average iron or steel leaf-spring import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 27%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
