Paddy Rice Market Size in Cameroon

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Cameroonian paddy rice market, when its value decreased by -0.3% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a remarkable increase. Paddy rice consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of paddy rice production in Cameroon declined to X ha, with a decrease of -3.4% on the year before. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 4,146%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, paddy rice exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 4,983% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

Nigeria (X tons) was the main destination for paddy rice exports from Cameroon, with a approx. 100% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Nigeria stood at +78.8%.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) also remains the key foreign market for paddy rice exports from Cameroon.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Nigeria amounted to +76.8%.

In 2022, the average paddy rice export price amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 52%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Nigeria.

Imports into Cameroon

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of paddy rice, when their volume increased by 15% to X kg. Overall, imports showed mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 56%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 237% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (X kg), the United Arab Emirates (X kg) and France (X kg) were the main suppliers of paddy rice imports to Cameroon, with a combined 90% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +65.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of paddy rice to Cameroon, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lebanon ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +36.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lebanon (+16.0% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-1.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average paddy rice import price amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 116%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
