Piper Pepper Market Size in Cameroon

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in the Cameroonian piper pepper market, when its value increased by 92% to $X. In general, consumption, however, showed a deep downturn. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Piper Pepper Production in Cameroon

In value terms, piper pepper production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, posted a measured expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 141% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of piper pepper in Cameroon amounted to X kg per ha in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 4.4%. The piper pepper yield peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of piper pepper decreased by -9.7% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 211%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, piper pepper exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 291% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

Turkey (X tons) was the main destination for piper pepper exports from Cameroon, accounting for a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, piper pepper exports to Turkey exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), twofold. Nigeria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Turkey stood at +30.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+39.2% per year) and Nigeria (+39.8% per year).

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for piper pepper exports from Cameroon, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Canada, with a 0.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to France totaled +44.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+18.2% per year) and Canada (+10.8% per year).

The average piper pepper export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -2.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 113% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Piper Pepper Imports

Imports into Cameroon

In 2022, the amount of piper pepper imported into Cameroon skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 143% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 197% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, piper pepper imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 138% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of piper pepper imports to Cameroon, with a combined 89% share of total imports. Switzerland, Brazil, Belgium and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +17.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest piper pepper suppliers to Cameroon were the United Arab Emirates ($X), China ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 79% share of total imports. Switzerland, Brazil, France and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Brazil, with a CAGR of +22.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average piper pepper import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -24.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 44% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
