Perfume Market Size in Cameroon

The Cameroonian perfume market rose modestly to $X in 2022, surging by 3.6% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -5.7% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Perfume Production in Cameroon

In value terms, perfume production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Cameroon

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of perfumes and toilet waters, when their volume decreased by -26% to X kg. Over the period under review, exports saw a dramatic slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 391%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, perfume exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a precipitous curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 281%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Congo (X kg) was the main destination for perfume exports from Cameroon, accounting for a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, perfume exports to Congo exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Gabon (X kg), threefold. Cote d'Ivoire (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Congo amounted to -43.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Gabon (-19.8% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+31.1% per year).

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the key foreign market for perfumes and toilet waters exports from Cameroon, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Gabon ($X), with a 7.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Congo, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Nigeria stood at -22.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Gabon (-20.6% per year) and Congo (-50.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average perfume export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 33% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 231% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ethiopia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nigeria (+17.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Perfume Imports

Imports into Cameroon

In 2022, the amount of perfumes and toilet waters imported into Cameroon reduced dramatically to X tons, declining by -28% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 179% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, perfume imports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed pronounced growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 111% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Congo (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) were the main suppliers of perfume imports to Cameroon, with a combined 75% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +33.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of perfumes and toilet waters to Cameroon, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Congo ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United Arab Emirates totaled +40.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Congo (+19.4% per year) and France (+11.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average perfume import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 64%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
