In general, exports, however, faced a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 622% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic bag exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a sharp reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 751% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Central African Republic (X tons) was the main destination for plastic bag exports from Cameroon, with a 66% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic bag exports to Central African Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Gabon (X tons), sixfold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Central African Republic totaled +7.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Gabon (-34.8% per year) and the UK (+6.9% per year).

In value terms, Central African Republic ($X), the UK ($X) and Togo ($X) constituted the largest markets for plastic bag exported from Cameroon worldwide, with a combined 74% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Togo, with a CAGR of +81.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Chad ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Cameroon

In 2022, approx. X tons of plastic sacks and bags were imported into Cameroon; growing by 3.5% compared with the year before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic bag imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), India (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) were the main suppliers of plastic bag imports to Cameroon, with a combined 64% share of total imports. Costa Rica, Saudi Arabia, Guatemala and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +63.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
