Wheat Market Size in Cameroon

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the Cameroonian wheat market, when its value decreased by -9.9% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a prominent expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Wheat Production in Cameroon

In value terms, wheat production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 205%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average wheat yield in Cameroon reached X tons per ha, flattening at 2021. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 4.6% against the previous year. The wheat yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of wheat in Cameroon shrank significantly to X ha, which is down by -15.6% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 45%. The wheat harvested area peaked at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Cameroon

In 2022, exports of wheat from Cameroon surged to X kg, with an increase of 85% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a sharp contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 300%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wheat exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 197%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X kg) was the main destination for wheat exports from Cameroon, with a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, wheat exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X kg), eightfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Belgium stood at +21.9%.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for wheat exports from Cameroon, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 4.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Belgium totaled +24.9%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average wheat export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 449%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+2.5%).

Wheat Imports

Imports into Cameroon

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of wheat, when their volume decreased by -2.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, wheat imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 31%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia (X tons), France (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of wheat imports to Cameroon, with a combined 52% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +54.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), France ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the largest wheat suppliers to Cameroon, together comprising 48% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Russia, with a CAGR of +59.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average wheat import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -9.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 25% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Paraguay ($X per ton), while the price for Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Paraguay (+9.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
