Apple Market Size in Canada

The Canadian apple market shrank slightly to $X in 2021, which is down by -4.4% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, apple production dropped modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a noticeable reduction. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The United States (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Cuba (X tons) were the main destinations of apple exports from Canada, together accounting for 88% of total exports. These countries were followed by India, the UK, Israel and Mexico, which together accounted for a further 9.4%.

For the third year in a row, Canada recorded decline in purchases abroad of apples, which decreased by -0.4% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, apple imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest apple supplier to Canada, accounting for a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, apple imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Chile (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by New Zealand (X tons), with a 3.3% share.
