Imports into Canada
For the third consecutive year, Canada recorded decline in supplies from abroad of fructose and fructose syrup, which decreased by -0.2% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports saw a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fructose imports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 17%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of fructose to Canada, accounting for a 89% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 1.7% share of total imports. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States totaled -3.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+11.0% per year) and China (+21.6% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fructose and fructose syrup to Canada, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 4.4% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 3.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States totaled -1.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+24.5% per year) and China (+25.1% per year).
