In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the Canadian ginger market, when its value decreased by -13.3% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate buoyant growth. In 2022, overseas shipments of ginger were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 197%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ginger exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 115% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tons) was the main destination for ginger exports from Canada, accounting for a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, ginger exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States totaled +17.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+10.7% per year) and Saint Kitts and Nevis (+24.7% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for ginger exports from Canada, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 7.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States amounted to +21.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+9.0% per year) and Saint Kitts and Nevis (+21.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average ginger export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -6.9% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ginger export price increased by +34.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 61%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Saint Kitts and Nevis ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Canada
In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of ginger, when their volume decreased by -0.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
In value terms, ginger imports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 90%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest ginger supplier to Canada, accounting for a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, ginger imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Peru (X tons), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +9.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Peru (+44.5% per year) and India (+8.5% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ginger to Canada, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with a 22% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +12.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Peru (+34.2% per year) and India (+10.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average ginger import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -19.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 82% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
