The United States (X tons) was the main destination for graphite exports from Canada, accounting for a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, graphite exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (X tons), with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States totaled -2.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+17.9% per year) and Spain (+5.9% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for graphite exports from Canada, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 4.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States stood at -3.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+14.9% per year) and Mexico (+14,523.5% per year).

The average graphite export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 17%. In 2021, overseas purchases of graphite (natural) were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, graphite imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 92%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest graphite supplier to Canada, with a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, graphite imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States amounted to -6.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+0.9% per year) and Mexico (-24.1% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of graphite to Canada, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 19% share of total imports.
