The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, semi-chemical wood pulp exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 28%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for semi-chemical wood pulp exports from Canada, accounting for a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, semi-chemical wood pulp exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Korea (X tons), with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+13.4% per year) and South Korea (-1.5% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for semi-chemical wood pulp exports from Canada, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to China was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+16.9% per year) and South Korea (-0.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average semi-chemical wood pulp export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 30% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to India ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) and Indonesia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of semi-chemical wood pulp were imported into Canada; with an increase of 4.2% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 89%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, semi-chemical wood pulp imports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of semi-chemical wood pulp to Canada, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 2.2% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 1.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+38.0% per year) and India (0.0% per year).
