Tea Market Size in Canada

In 2022, the Canadian tea market decreased by -10.5% to $X, falling for the fifth year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 7.7%. Tea consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of tea was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 35%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tea exports rose to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for tea exports from Canada, accounting for a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, tea exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States stood at -4.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+64.6% per year) and the Netherlands (+18.6% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for tea exports from Canada, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 7.6% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 0.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States stood at -1.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+52.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+0.2% per year).

In 2022, the average tea export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -4.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 14%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Canada

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of tea, when their volume increased by 5.5% to X tons. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 12%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tea imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, faced a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

India (X tons), the United States (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main suppliers of tea imports to Canada, with a combined 60% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of -1.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the United States ($X), India ($X) and Sri Lanka ($X) constituted the largest tea suppliers to Canada, together comprising 57% of total imports.

India, with a CAGR of -1.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
