For the fourth year in a row, the Central Asian acetic acid market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 16% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The biggest shipments were from Uzbekistan (X tons), together amounting to 99% of total export.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the acetic acid exports, with a CAGR of +38.7% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of Uzbekistan (+98 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) also remains the largest acetic acid supplier in Central Asia.

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 48% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a slight descent. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Uzbekistan.

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of acetic acid decreased by -22.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed notable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 70%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, acetic acid imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 74% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main importer of acetic acid, achieving 57% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Turkmenistan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons), Tajikistan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons), together achieving a 38% share of total imports. Mongolia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to acetic acid imports into Kazakhstan stood at +1.8%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+48.9%), Mongolia (+8.0%), Kyrgyzstan (+7.3%) and Tajikistan (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +48.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-3.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+9.3 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (+2.7 p.p.) and Mongolia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-5.7 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (-8.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported acetic acid in Central Asia, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with a 9.3% share.

In Kazakhstan, acetic acid imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+68.8% per year) and Turkmenistan (-4.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 50% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+13.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
