Activated Carbon Market Size in Central Asia

In 2022, the Central Asian activated carbon market decreased by -1.4% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Activated Carbon Production in Central Asia

In value terms, activated carbon production rose remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 49%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of activated carbon, when their volume decreased by -6.4% to X tons. In general, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 8,452% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, activated carbon exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 6,270% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan was the major exporter of activated carbon in Central Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 83% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), constituting a 13% share of total exports. Uzbekistan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the activated carbon exports, with a CAGR of +41.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+30.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Uzbekistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Kyrgyzstan (+13 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -16.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest activated carbon supplier in Central Asia, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 5.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan stood at +33.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (+54.9% per year) and Uzbekistan (-17.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 89% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 101% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+18.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Activated Carbon Imports

Imports in Central Asia

Activated carbon imports fell significantly to X tons in 2022, dropping by -33.7% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 69% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, activated carbon imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 55%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main importer of activated carbon, mixing up 48% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 23% share, followed by Tajikistan (20%) and Kyrgyzstan (5.5%). Mongolia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to activated carbon imports into Kazakhstan stood at +8.7%. At the same time, Tajikistan (+21.7%), Uzbekistan (+11.8%) and Mongolia (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +21.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-7.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+23 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Mongolia (-1.9 p.p.), Kazakhstan (-5.5 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (-25.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported activated carbon in Central Asia, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Tajikistan, with a 12% share.

In Kazakhstan, activated carbon imports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+18.9% per year) and Tajikistan (+19.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Mongolia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
