Animal Fats Market Size in Central Asia

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Central Asian animal fats market, when its value decreased by -2.3% to $X. The total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +79.6% against 2012 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

The total production indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -0.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 29%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of animal fats and oils decreased by -77.8% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 704%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, animal fats exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 421%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X kg), creating a 5.1% share of total exports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the animal fats and oils exports, with a CAGR of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021. Kyrgyzstan (-16.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kazakhstan (+20 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-19.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest animal fats supplier in Central Asia, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 1.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan totaled +3.0%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -29.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 124%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan amounted to $X per ton.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of animal fats and oils, when their volume decreased by -7.2% to X tons. Overall, imports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 157% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, animal fats imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 461%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Tajikistan (X tons) was the major importer of animal fats and oils, constituting 51% of total imports. Turkmenistan (X tons) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (15%) and Kyrgyzstan (11%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to animal fats imports into Tajikistan stood at +11.7%. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+41.7%) and Kyrgyzstan (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkmenistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +41.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-23.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan increased by +41, +22 and +7.3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Turkmenistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported animal fats and oils in Central Asia, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tajikistan ($X), with a 28% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkmenistan amounted to +76.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tajikistan (+10.3% per year) and Kazakhstan (-30.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -23.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 119%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkmenistan (+24.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
