Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of articles of bitumen in rolls decreased by -36.6% to X square meters for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 299%. The volume of export peaked at X square meters in 2020, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, rolled bitumen articles exports fell sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 229% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in exports structure, recording X square meters, which was near 94% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X square meters), mixing up a 5.8% share of total exports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the articles of bitumen in rolls exports, with a CAGR of +29.7% from 2012 to 2021. Uzbekistan (-39.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+5.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -5.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest rolled bitumen articles supplier in Central Asia, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 6.4% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per square meter in 2021, leveling off at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 107%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per square meter), while Kazakhstan totaled $X per square meter.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+5.1%).

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, purchases abroad of articles of bitumen in rolls increased by 13% to X square meters, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 23%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X square meters. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rolled bitumen articles imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +49.8% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Kazakhstan was the major importing country with an import of about X square meters, which recorded 63% of total imports. Mongolia (X square meters) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kyrgyzstan (5.5%) and Uzbekistan (5.5%). Tajikistan (X square meters) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to rolled bitumen articles imports into Kazakhstan stood at +4.7%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+48.7%), Mongolia (+5.5%), Kyrgyzstan (+5.1%) and Tajikistan (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +48.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Uzbekistan (+5.5 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+3.1 p.p.) and Mongolia (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported articles of bitumen in rolls in Central Asia, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mongolia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 9.1% share.

In Kazakhstan, rolled bitumen articles imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mongolia (+1.3% per year) and Uzbekistan (+51.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per square meter in 2021, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per square meter), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
