Exports in Central Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of bananas and plantains decreased by -29.3% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 227%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, banana and plantain exports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 145% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), creating an 18% share of total exports. Turkmenistan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +14.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+17.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +17.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-50.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+3.2 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-5.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest banana and plantain supplier in Central Asia, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

In Kazakhstan, banana and plantain exports expanded at an average annual rate of +23.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (+15.7% per year) and Turkmenistan (-50.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 8.5% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, banana and plantain export price increased by +13.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 45%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+8.7%).

Imports in Central Asia

For the sixth year in a row, Central Asia recorded growth in overseas purchases of bananas and plantains, which increased by 56% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 310% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Uzbekistan (X tons) was the main importer of bananas and plantains, achieving 52% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons), together achieving a 44% share of total imports. Mongolia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +51.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 97% of total imports.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +43.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -12.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Kazakhstan ($X per ton) and Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) and Mongolia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mongolia (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
