Banana Market Size in Central Asia
For the sixth consecutive year, the Central Asian banana market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 21% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption recorded prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Banana Production in Central Asia
In value terms, banana production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +13.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 31%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
The country with the largest volume of banana production was Kyrgyzstan (X tons), comprising approx. 100% of total volume.
In Kyrgyzstan, banana production increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012-2022.
Banana Exports
Exports in Central Asia
In 2022, shipments abroad of bananas decreased by -41.6% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 259% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, banana exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 279%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Kazakhstan represented the key exporter of bananas in Central Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 80% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), mixing up an 18% share of total exports. Turkmenistan (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bananas exports, with a CAGR of +39.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+17.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-50.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kazakhstan (+36 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-38.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) emerged as the largest banana supplier in Central Asia, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.
In Kazakhstan, banana exports expanded at an average annual rate of +39.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (+17.1% per year) and Turkmenistan (-50.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 1.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+0.1%).
Banana Imports
Imports in Central Asia
In 2022, banana imports in Central Asia surged to X tons, with an increase of 55% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 253% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, banana imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 190%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Uzbekistan was the largest importer of bananas in Central Asia, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 53% of total imports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 44% share of total imports. Mongolia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +51.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 97% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +43.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 15%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Kazakhstan ($X per ton) and Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) and Mongolia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mongolia (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
