The Central Asian market for hot-rolled steel bars and rods surged to $X in 2021, picking up by 24% against the previous year. In value terms, hot-rolled steel bar and rod production expanded significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -14.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 32%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports in Central Asia reduced dramatically to X tons, dropping by -32.1% against 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 529% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports rose notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 297% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 53% of total exports. Uzbekistan (X tons) held a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kyrgyzstan (13%) and Tajikistan (6.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +40.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 97% of total exports. Tajikistan lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 3.4%.

Tajikistan, with a CAGR of +46.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 57% against the previous year. Export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+11.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, purchases abroad of hot-rolled steel bars and rods increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +127.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, hot-rolled steel bar and rod imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a notable expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 44% of total imports. Mongolia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Uzbekistan (16%), Tajikistan (13%) and Kyrgyzstan (7.7%). Turkmenistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hot-rolled steel bar and rod imports into Kazakhstan stood at +7.3%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+228.1%), Tajikistan (+13.4%), Kyrgyzstan (+8.7%) and Mongolia (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +228.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-20.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan increased by +16, +7.3, +6.4 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hot-rolled steel bars and rods in Central Asia, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mongolia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 15% share.

In Kazakhstan, hot-rolled steel bar and rod imports increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mongolia (+5.5% per year) and Uzbekistan (+146.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Mongolia ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) and Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
