The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 539% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

The shipments of the one major exporters of bedding and furnishing articles (quilts, eiderdowns, cushions, pouffes and pillows), namely Uzbekistan, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bedding and furnishing articles (quilts, eiderdowns, cushions, pouffes and pillows) exports, with a CAGR of +171.8% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Uzbekistan (+97 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 103%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Uzbekistan.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of bedding and furnishing articles (quilts, eiderdowns, cushions, pouffes and pillows) decreased by -81% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, imports, however, posted temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 348% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bedding and furnishing article imports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 214% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 77% of total imports in 2022. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a 9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tajikistan (7.4%). Uzbekistan (X tons), Turkmenistan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to bedding and furnishing article imports into Kazakhstan stood at +13.3%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+21.2%) and Uzbekistan (+16.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +21.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-5.4%), Mongolia (-7.7%) and Tajikistan (-14.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kazakhstan (+44 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (+7 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Turkmenistan, Mongolia and Tajikistan saw its share reduced by -3.3%, -4.7% and -45.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bedding and furnishing articles (quilts, eiderdowns, cushions, pouffes and pillows) in Central Asia, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tajikistan ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 4.9% share.

In Kazakhstan, bedding and furnishing article imports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tajikistan (-17.2% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+16.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 35% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 43% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+11.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
