Beef Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian beef market rose to $X in 2021, with an increase of 2.4% against the previous year. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Uzbekistan (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons), together accounting for 81% of total production. Tajikistan, Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +24.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average beef yield amounted to X kg per head in 2021, flattening at 2020. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 6.5% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X kg per head. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the beef yield remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the number of animals slaughtered for beef production in Central Asia declined to X heads, shrinking by -2% compared with the previous year. The total number of producing animals indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. In 2021, overseas shipments of beef (cattle meat) increased by 31% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, beef exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 86%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Kazakhstan dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 98% of total exports in 2021. Mongolia (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the beef (cattle meat) exports, with a CAGR of +39.9% from 2012 to 2021. Mongolia (-16.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest beef supplier in Central Asia, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mongolia ($X), with a 1.1% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 26% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Mongolia amounted to $X per ton.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 53%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Uzbekistan (X tons) was the key importer of beef (cattle meat), mixing up 54% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 32% share, followed by Turkmenistan (11%). Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
