Blanket Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian blanket market dropped slightly to $X in 2022, reducing by -2.8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +4.8% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, blanket production reduced slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 24%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of blankets and traveling rugs (except electric blankets), when their volume decreased by -34.6% to X tons. In general, exports showed a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 603% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, blanket exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 193%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan represented the largest exporter of blankets and traveling rugs (except electric blankets) in Central Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 64% of total exports in 2022. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Turkmenistan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 30% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the blankets and traveling rugs (except electric blankets) exports, with a CAGR of +60.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+13.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mongolia (-12.4%) and Kyrgyzstan (-16.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+64 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (+4.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Mongolia (-2.5 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (-66 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest blanket supplier in Central Asia, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Uzbekistan stood at +65.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kyrgyzstan (-5.9% per year) and Turkmenistan (-8.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 59% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 284% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, the amount of blankets and traveling rugs (except electric blankets) imported in Central Asia skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 21% on 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 77%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, blanket imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 87%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 77% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), Mongolia (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons), together generating a 17% share of total imports. The following importers - Tajikistan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons) - together made up 5.7% of total imports.

Imports into Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -3.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+42.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +42.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-13.2%), Mongolia (-14.1%), Tajikistan (-24.1%) and Kyrgyzstan (-33.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan increased by +54 and +7.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported blankets and traveling rugs (except electric blankets) in Central Asia, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan totaled +1.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+51.6% per year) and Mongolia (-28.8% per year).

In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
